the professional association of human subject protection specialists.

NIH Training Module Replaced!

A new online training module has replaced the NIH certification.  It is called
the Protecting Human Research participants (PHRP) course.  All links for
NIH training modules will take you to the new website.

Student Handbook on Human Subject Research

All materials for IRB applications should be:

  • Inter-campus mailed to 178 Science Bldg., Portland Campus, or
  • Placed in the ORC dropbox outside 178 Science Bldg., Portland, or
  • Sent U.S. mail to Office of Research Compliance, USM, PO Box 9300,
    Portland, ME  04104-9300, or
  • Emailed to usmirb@usm.maine.edu

 

What is the IRB?

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a standing committee comprised of

professors, physicians, and community members who ensure that research

involving human participants is well planned and ethical.

     

Important!

The only legally authorized entity at USM that can determine what is or is not research (as defined in 45 CFR 46), for purposes of regulatory compliance and human subjects protection, is the ORC/IRB. No other person, group, department, etc. has the legal authority to make such a determination.

Important!

Submissions for IRB review must be received 30 days prior to the next Board meeting, be complete, and in no need of major revisions. If it does not meet these requirements, then it will be reviewed at the next available opportunity.
