To assist in a successful transition to USM, complete the following steps:
We want to ensure that you have a successful experience at USM and would like to remind you of the following:
- Check Your Schedule of Classes
Log into MaineStreet and check your schedule to make sure you are registered for the appropriate classes. You can make changes to your schedule up to the first week of classes. It is a good idea to connect with your advisor if you have any questions.
- Students enrolled in Online or Blended courses
Your instructor will be posting course-specific information, including the course syllabus, to the course Blackboard site. This site should be available to you approximately one week before your class begins. For more information please read the Online Course Information sheet.
- Check your Student Bill and Arrange for Payment
You can view your bill via MaineStreet. Payment is due prior to the start of the semester. Visit the Student Accounts webpage to learn how to make a payment or sign up for a payment plan.
- Know the Withdrawal Policy
The withdrawal policy for dropped courses varies depending on course length, to verify the length of your course please visit your MaineStreet Student Center. You can use the calendar icon on your student center to view the applicable add/drop and withdrawal dates for your courses. Please review the course withdrawal policy and contact the Registrar’s office if you have any questions.
- Check your @maine.edu email account regularly
Official course notices and payment reminders will be sent via email. Email is the official and primary means of communication at USM. If you have questions, please contact the Help Desk or by calling 780-4029.
- Immunization Records and Health Insurance (MANDATORY)
If you were born after December 31, 1956, you must comply with the Maine Post-Secondary School Immunization Law. For more information, visit www.usm.maine.edu/health/immunization.htm. Verify your records were submitted before school starts.
Make sure you accepted or waived the required Health Insurance program.
- Verify your Financial Aid (if applicable)
You can view your Financial Aid status and award via MaineStreet. Staff in the Student Financial Aid Office are here to assist you. For more information, visit www.usm.maine.edu/fin or contact the office at (207) 780-5250.
- Purchase Books
The USM Portland Bookstore in the Woodbury Campus Center carries books for USM classes which meet in Portland, Gorham, Bath, Saco, Sanford and Distance Ed. (207) 780-4070
The USM Lewiston-Auburn Bookstore carries books for Lewiston-Auburn classes only. (207) 753-6520
Books for all USM classes may be ordered online at: www.usm.maine.edu/books.
- Get USM Student ID
If you did not pick up your USM Card during orientation, you can still stop by during normal business hours. Learn more about how to use your USM Card on and off campus.
- Apply for a Parking Permit
Gorham and Portland: To receive a parking permit bring a valid state car registration and your USM Student ID to the Portland Parking Garage Office or visit the campus Student ID office. Your transportation fee is already included in your student bill. Lewiston: No parking decal required.
- Navigate the Campus
- Support for Students with Disabilities
The Disability Services Center provides a wide range of services to qualified students with sensory, mobility, physical, psychological, learning, and attentional disabilities who currently are enrolled in USM credit and non-credit courses and programs. Contact the DSC for information regarding your particular needs at (207) 780-4706 or TTY (207) 780-4395. Documentation may be required. - Transfer Students
You will receive a Transfer Credit Evaluation in the mail soon after your acceptance to USM. For more information, contact the Transfer Affairs Office at (207) 780-5340.
- Advanced Placement/Experiential Learning Credit
Some entering students may be eligible to qualify for USM undergraduate credit for having completed any of the following: AP exams, CLEP exams, DANTES exams, work/life experience, military experience, non-collegiate sponsored instruction, noncredit courses, seminars, workshops, licenses and certificates. - Veterans Services
Veterans Services at the University of Southern Maine (USM) serves veterans, servicemembers, and their families, who are accessing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits, often referred to as the GI Bill.
