This course is designed to provide participants with an overview of the relevant research on adolescent literacy and how it can be linked to effective classroom practice. Participants will personally experience the cognitive and metacognitive strategies that are used by proficient readers and will work together to create a plan for implementing the strategies into their own instruction. The strategies have been teacher-tested and can be applied in content-area instruction. The course will also address the critical issue of student motivation to read and write.
