Global food security is recognized as one of the critical challenges for this century.  The world’s population is expected to increase to 9 billion by 2050; this increase coupled with increasing scarcity of land and water, changing consumption, a growing biofuels industry and other drivers have caused some to predict a need for as much as a doubling of agricultural production. Meeting this projected demand will require new agricultural technologies because current approaches are not sustainable.  Many are calling for a Second Green Revolution, which has higher productivity potentials and less environmental impact.
