Transit Watchers Gather on the Western Promenade!

June 5, 2012:    Observers of the Venus transit gather at the Western Promenade in Portland, Maine.     Though a cloud bank obscured the Sun less than an hour after the transit's beginning, transit watchers saw first and second contacts through telescopes and protective viewers.  This viewing was literally a once in a lifetime event, as the next Venus transit will occur in December 2117.    Photo by Roger Gendron.
