The University of Southern Maine Police Department is a recognized police agency in the State of Maine. The department's officers are fully sworn to up hold all Federal, State, Local and University laws and policies. The officers are trained at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and undergo the same training as any officer working for a municipal department would.

USM police officers have complete powers of arrest, the authority to issue traffic citations and assist in mutal aid situations with surrounding towns and cities.  The officers are also given the authority to issue violations of the Student Conduct Code and all other University policies.

The department is also responsible for providing safety and security services for students, staff, vistors and all University buildings and property.

The department is made up of administrative staff, patrol officers, an investigator, communications, and records management.
