Dr. Manuel Avalos is the dean of USM’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He comes to Maine from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he was a Professor of Political Science in the Department of Public and International Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Faculty Support and Development (2007-2011) and the Director of Research Partnerships (2011-2012).
In the directorship position, Dr. Avalos assisted faculty, staff and students in identifying funding opportunities and collaborative opportunities with other universities, the private sector and state agencies. He was the first point of contact for UNCW’scampus innovation initiatives.
Dr. Avalos also was Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Support and Development, through which he oversaw faculty recruitment, university accreditation, facility planning and strategic planning in academic affairs.
At Arizona State University (ASU), Dr. Avalos was Associate Vice Provost for Research and Faculty Development, as well as Associate Director at the Hispanic Research Center. He served as Assistant and Associate Professor in the ASU Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
He received his doctorate in political science from the University of New Mexico and did his undergraduate work at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Avalos is a collector of Hispanic art and first-edition science fiction books. He enjoys the visual and performing arts and sports.
