Guest Speaker October 20th
Kyle Parker, a senior staff member on the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives will speak to POS 205 on Monday, October 20th at 11:45 am in Luther Bonney 326. The talk will be open to USM faculty, staff, and students, as well as members of the Portland community.
Mr. Parker will be speaking about Human Rights in U.S.-Russia Relations.His talk is titled:
Mommy, there’s a foreign agent under my bed: A Conversation on Russia’s Slanderous Campaign Against Civil Society.
Through his work as a policy adviser on the Helsinki Commission, Mr. Parker has played an influential role in developing landmark sanctions on human rights violators in Russia.
Mr. Parker’s talk will be ‘Q & A’ discussion, where students will ask questions about the unfolding events in Russia and Ukraine, human rights concerns in Russia, as well as questions regarding U.S. policy toward Russia.
As a graduate of University of Maine, Mr. Parker is also interested in offering guidance and advice to USM students interested in pursuing careers in government. This could be a great opportunity for any of your students considering a career in government to speak directly with an active policy adviser in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mr. Parker may be able to offer particular guidance to students interested in pursuing careers as Congressional policy advisers; work in the Foreign Service; and/or work in the area of human rights policy or activism. He is looking forward to talking with USM students interested in pursuing careers in public service.
Kyle Parker’s Bio:
A native of Old Town and a graduate of the University of Maine, Kyle is an expert on European affairs, comprehensive security, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). He is the principal architect of landmark sanctions imposed by President Obama on human rights violators in 2013 - sanctions that replaced Cold War-era trade restrictions and inspired a global human rights movement. Kyle is the top Democratic staffer in Congress with oversight responsibility for U.S. foreign policy in Europe.
