POS 380: International Human Rights

Refugees and Barbed Wire

This course examines how international human rights norms emerge and evolve.  We analyze how international organizations and social movements work to raise awareness of human rights crises and advocate for stronger protections.  We examine historical and contemporary humanitarian crises and evaluate when and why the international community acts to enforce human rights laws.  As a part of the course, students engage in volunteer work supporting members of refugee communities in Portland.  This component enriches understanding of the cases we study in the course by providing students the opportunity to meet members of the Portland community who have fled humanitarian crises.
