The Installation of Dr. Glenn Cummings as the 13th President of the University of Southern Maine

The Installation of President Cummings will be a major university event, replete with a dramatic processional, faculty garbed in academic regalia, a unique recognition of many of our top students, special guests, and musical performances by students in our School of Music.

We are expecting all faculty and staff to attend, and encourage our students, our alumni and the community to join us for what promises to be a wonderful and moving event.

We have reserved seating for people requiring the service of ASL interpreters. Please contact rstein@maine.edu in advance to let us know the number of seats you require, and then when you arrive apprise an usher to direct you to this seating.

We're providing transportation to the Gorham campus from both the Portland and Lewiston campuses. For those interested in taking one of the buses, please RSVP. Bus seating will be first come, first served once the RSVP deadline has passed on Nov. 29. More information is available here.

Important Information, Please Read:

  • Unless you are teaching a class on Friday mornings, there is an expectation all faculty will attend the Installation. 

 

  • Reservations for this event are now closed. Reserved seating for faculty is based on RSVPs received.

 

  • As part of the Installation, faculty are expected to participate in the Processional in full academic regalia. If you require cap and gown, please contact Catherine Johnson immediately at catherine.johnson@maine.edu or 780-4071.

 

  • Faculty members who nominated Inauguration Scholars can check here to see the final list of Inauguration Scholars. Your nominee/s will be marching alongside of you during the Processional.

 

  • On December 2nd, faculty should report to Hill Gym in the Costello Sports Complex by 9:30 AM for robing and instructions. Please be prompt. The line-up for the Processional and the Recessional itself are not typical and instructions are required.
  • Students are encouraged to attend the Installation and may sit in any unreserved seating section.

  • If a student is an Inauguration Scholar there are special seating arrangements and instructions, see below.

Congratulations!  If your name is on this list, you have been selected as an Inauguration Scholar. USM President Glenn Cummings and Provost Jeannine Uzzi look forward to recognizing you during the December 2nd Installation.

  • Inauguration Scholars will be afforded the special honor of participating in the Processional that begins the ceremony. During the Processional, each Inauguration Scholar will march alongside a faculty member. Inauguration Scholars will then sit together in a special section adjacent to the faculty section.

 

  • On December 2nd, all Inauguration Scholars must assemble with faculty in the Costello Sports Complex by 9:30 AM. Specific instructions on how the Processional will work will be explained there.

 

  • If you have family, friends or guests attending Installation, – and we hope you do – they should take seats in the audience section and await the 10:30 start.

 

  • As an Inauguration Scholaryou are encouraged to wear either business dress or business casual attire to the Installation.  While there is no formal dress code, jeans and t-shirts are discouraged.

  • The event has been approved for release time.

 

  • Staff who are also USM alumni are asked to represent all alumni by leading the Processional behind signs signifying the different decades of graduating classes.  Staff alumni who march should dress in business casual or professional attire. More information to come on that, but we hope you will participate.
  • We hope alumni will be joining us for this special university event.

  • Alumni will be seated in a special VIP section.

  • The event will begin promptly at 10:30.
