RUSSELL CHAIR IN PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATION
Every two years a member of the USM faculty is appointed as holder of the Walter E. Russell Chair in Philosophy and Education for a two-year period. The distinction carries the responsibility of presenting one or more public lectures on issues in education and/or philosophy during each of the two years. The holder of the Russell Chair receives an honorarium of $2,000 for each of the two years. S/he also receives $500 for each of the two years to support fulfillment of these responsibilities. Lenny Shedletsky, Professor of Communication, will hold the 2009-2011 Russell Chair. Professor Shedletsky proposes to convene a series of four discussions tentatively titled “The Quality of Discussion Online versus in the Classroom: Where do you stand?” Professor Shedletsky is currently editing a book on this topic and plans to engage a number of its contributors in this ongoing dialogue, either in person or on-line. Sandra Wachholz, Associate Professor of Criminology, will receive equivalent support from the Fannie Gray Fund to carry out a series of presentations related to teaching and learning about environmental sustainability and climate change. Professor Wachholz has for several years co-chaired the Maine Watersheds Project and regularly co-facilitates faculty development workshops on integrating environmental topics into course content.
