The Trustee Professorship Committee recommended and Provost Stevenson accepted Associate Professor of Music Dan Sonenberg as the 2013-2014 Trustee Professor for his proposal The Summer King: An Opera on the Life of Josh Gibson. His plan is to orchestra his two-act opera The Summer King, based on the life of Negro-League player Josh Gibson, in preparation for a concert premiere scheduled at Portland's Merrill Auditorium in May 2014. Portland Ovations is planning to present a full orchestrated unstage version as the grand finale to their 2013-2014 concert season. USM sponsored their application for funding from the National Endowment for the Arts for the production of this event. Prof. Sonenberg has been working on this piece for 10 years and hopes the performance will attract the attention of opera companies and interest in producing a full staged production of the work in the near future.
Please join the Provost Office in congratulating Professor Sonenberg.
