BAFTA award-winning composer, sound designer, guitarist Jim Bonney to premiere concerto during artist residency at USM - May 3-6

Jim Bonney

The USM School of Music’s spring semester will come to a close with a special guest artist in residence, Jim Bonney, a BAFTA award-winning composer, sound designer and guitarist. The School of Music’s new assistant professor and director of bands, Trae Blanco, will welcome Bonney for the Maine premiere of his concerto,“DARKlightNESS for Electric Guitar and Wind Ensemble,” which premiered at Arizona State University in 2015. USM will be a consortium supporter commissioning this new work.

Over the four-day residency, Bonney will give a master class at USM’s Ci2 Lab, lead a gaming live discussion at Arcadia in Portland about his experience with interactive gaming, and hold open rehearsals with the USM Concert Band in preparation for the premiere of “DARKlightNESS.” The concerto will also feature USM Artist Faculty Gary Wittner on electric guitar and is sponsored by the Warren Memorial Foundation.

“Having a world class artist like Jim Bonney with one foot in the classical music scene and the other in mainstream gaming music here at USM is a one-time opportunity for our students,” said Blanco. “With the launch of the gaming minor in the fall of 2017 and the perspective major in the coming years, this residency will allow the School of Music to collaborate with the Ci2 Lab to promote students’ creativity and awareness of the different types of music making that is possible in the twenty-first century.”
