Shane O’Hara of Sanford is the recipient of the University of Southern Maine 2012 Emerging Professional Staff Award, which recognizes outstanding promise for continued excellence and achievement with less than five years of professional experience in higher education. O’Hara, online learning support specialist in USM’s Center for Technology Enhanced Learning, was recognized for his talent, creative ideas and strong leadership role in emerging technologies.
O’Hara has had extensive military education, including a non-communications analyst course in 2001 and 280 course hours in “Radar in Practice” in 2005. He has five years of higher education experience focused on Instructional Technology, Design and Support, and more than five years of intelligence analysis experience within the government sector. O’Hara is actively involved with Boy and Girl Scouts, Little League, community theater and projects such as placing flags on veterans’ graves, roadside cleanup, Christmas tree sales and food drives.
His colleagues recognize O’Hara as a hard-working, dedicated staff member. In his short time at USM, he has put together two faculty technology showcases and worked on a proposal for a pilot test of a new media web-based learning tool, MediaKron. He is known to have “great patience which is appreciated by frustrated faculty members who are tearing their hair out over Blackboard problems. He is always respectful, calm and thorough,” says colleague Julien Murphy.
