On Tuesday, November 13, at 6:45 p.m., the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service will host Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew for a presentation titled “Maine DHHS: Challenges and Opportunities.” The event will be held in the Wishcamper Center on the USM Portland campus and is free and open to the public.
Reductions in MaineCare, approved by the Maine Legislature earlier this year, are currently under consideration for waiver by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Mayhew’s presentation will address the department’s vision for the future, the challenges that are facing Maine’s Medicaid program, and opportunities that exist to transform the way services are delivered.
Prior to Mayhew’s appointment as DHHS commissioner, she was the senior health policy advisor for the LePage administration, focusing on health care issues and policies on both the state and federal levels. Before joining state government, Mayhew served as the vice president for the Maine Hospital Association for 11 years. She was previously a partner in the public affairs firm Hawkes & Mayhew based in Augusta and has also served as a manager of state government relations for Equifax Corporation in Atlanta, GA.
