Jenny L. Nelson of Topsham, director of the Sullivan Recreation and Fitness Complex, was presented the 2012 Distinguished Professional Staff Award, which recognizes distinguished career achievement and service to the University by a member of the administration with five or more years of service to USM.
Nelson came to USM in 1976 as the office manager of Education Media Services, transferring to assume the role of coordinator of the University Health and Recreation Program before becoming manager and finally, director of the Sullivan Complex. Her strong communication and organizational skills have proven her to be a role model for students and co-workers.
An active member at USM, she has served on the Wellness Advisory Board, Wellness Fair Planning Committee, Student Welcome Committee and USM’s Professional Staff Senate.
Currently, she is the team photographer for Mt. Ararat High School’s junior varsity and varsity field hockey teams, junior varsity and varsity girls basketball teams, the varsity girls softball team, and the Maine Maniacs AAU Girls Basketball Club.
She was recognized for this award because of her guiding principle of fairness and balancing the needs of students, faculty, staff and community members, as well as her excellence in being a steward of the facility she directs.
Nelson earned a B.S. in administration from USM in 1993.
