Gorham, ME -- The USM Art Department and galleries will present two exhibitions this spring showcasing the work of prolific mixed media artist Clint Fulkerson, as well as the creative work of Maine Art Education Association members, who teach in Maine’s public and private schools and universities.

Additional programming includes a discussion on public art and government artist funding with visiting artist Clint Fulkerson and Julie Horn, Visual Arts Director and Percent for Art Associate for the Maine Arts Commission, and a visiting artist lecture with artist and gamer Krista Hoefle, whose creative practice is aimed at revealing the underlying aspects of videogame structure.

USM student exhibitions will include the Student Juried Exhibition, USM Juried Student Selected Works and BFA and BA exhibits.

Clint Fulkerson: Fluid Geometry, January 17 - March 31

Blue Nebula

Fulkerson will create a new mural on the gallery wall of the USM AREA Gallery in Portland and exhibit several paintings based on intricate compositions of repeating geometric shapes. Mark Wethli has written that “Fulkerson’s work parallels the generative principle of repeating forms found at all scales in the natural world–from the cosmic to the infinitesimal–to create his intricate, prolific, and visionary art.” Fulkerson has exhibited his work at many Maine venues, is represented by the Curator Gallery in NYC, and has received several public art commissions.

Portals: Work by Maine Art Education Association Members, January 25 - March 2

Swinging Bridge by Mary Pennington

This exhibition brings together the creative work of art educators from around the state of Maine to celebrate the studio practice and exploration that takes place beyond the classroom. Artists were invited to create their interpretation of the concept of portal –a gate or entrance that is especially grand or imposing; or, an entryway, doorway or threshold.

The artists represented in this show teach in Maine’s public and private schools and universities and are members of the Maine Art Education Association: an arts advocacy organization that promotes the artistic learning of children, encourages innovation and research in art education, and the exchange of ideas and practices among teachers.

Artist-in-Residence Muhsana Ali, internationally recognized artist based in Senegal and designer of the East Bayside Community Mosaic Mural, will engage USM students in community artwork to strengthen the fabric of the USM and Greater Portland community.

All exhibitions and events hosted by the USM Art Department and Gallery are free and open to the public. For more information visit https://www.usm.maine.edu/gallery.
