Excitement is growing in USM’s Portland Bookstore as plans materialize for the store’s first book release party for a USM graduate. The party celebrating Morgan Callan Rogers’ debut novel, “Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea” will take place on Thursday, January 26 at 7 p.m. in the Bookstore located in the Woodbury Campus Center, Bedford St. Portland. The event is free and open to the public, and books will be available for purchase.
“Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea,” which will be released by Viking Press, was first published in Germany as “Rubinrotes Herz, Eisblaue See” in July 2010, where it won a Reader’s Choice award in general literature. In 2012, it will be published in Spain, Italy, and Australia. The book chronicles the coming of age of Florine, daughter of a lobsterman, whose mother vanishes while on a trip.
Rogers, who grew up in Bath, Maine, received her B.A. in English in 1988 and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing in 2004 from the University of Southern Maine. Rogers has held many positions, including librarian, secretary, journalist, actress, editor and teacher, although she has always been a writer. She credits Associate Professor of English Dianne Benedict, who told her she had a gift for writing, for keeping her dream of writing a novel alive. Describing her experience in USM’s Stonecoast M.F.A. as “fabulous,” she says, “I thank USM for having the wisdom to start this program, and I’m happy to have been part of the inaugural class.”
Her stories have been published in Portland Monthly and in Crosscut Literary Journal. Currently, she divides her time between coastal Maine and South Dakota.
