USM historian pens op-ed on Portland's Jewish Community Center for Press Herald

USM Historian Abraham Peck authored a Portland Press Herald op-ed describing decades of change within the city’s Jewish and secular communities.

The piece, “Reflections: How Portland’s Jewish Community Center helped heal tensions,” looked at the center’s founding on the eve of World War II, its development and its sale in 1979.

“For Portland’s Jewish community, the tension that had once existed between being a Jew and being an American could now be lessened and translated into an understanding that being a better Jew was important in becoming a better American,” Peck wrote.
