USM shortstop Mary Caron was recently nominated as the Little East candidate for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Woman of the Year honor for 2017.

As captain of the softball team and a graduate student studying Public Health, she has won numerous awards for her outstanding achievements. Caron has earned a place on the 2017 Academic All-American team and is the co-winner of the 2017 Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership award.

"One of USM's and the nation's best and brightest, Mary is quite simply one of the finest student-athletes to compete in a Huskies' uniform," said USM Director of Athletics Al Bean. "Mary is a shining example of our goals when we talk about the well-rounded student-athlete."

The NCAA Woman of the Year committee will choose a female student athlete in late October. If granted this award, Caron will be honored for her work in science as well as accomplishments out in the field.
