USM issues statement condemning hatred and violence

USM condemns hatred and violence

University of Southern Maine President Glenn Cummings has issued a statement in response to the tragic events that occurred between Aug. 11-12 in Charlottesville, Virginia:

"In the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Charlottesville, I am grateful that so many people from all walks of life and from across the political aisle have stood up for what is so clearly right and denounced what is so clearly wrong  -- just as Heather Heyer had the courage to do.

"For those of us in leadership positions, it is especially important in these perilous times where sometimes our very democracy seems at risk that we take an unequivocal stand against the violent rants and acts of white supremacists, Neo Nazis, and other bigots and racists.

"As President of the University of Southern Maine, let me be clear: USM stands with those who believe in supporting one another, who embrace and cherish our diversity, and who are devoted to working together to make sure everyone belonging to our campus community feels welcome, valued and safe.

"We stand with Heather Heyer."
