Adding a course
http://www.usm.maine.edu/~reg/PDF/ADDFORM.pdf
Obtain and complete a Course Add Form. Obtain instructors’ signature and return form by the end of the first week of the term to the Registrar’s Office. For late afternoon, evening, and weekend courses that meet once a week, adds will be accepted through the day following the second class meeting. Charges will increase if the total number of credit hours increases. Payment for additional credit hours is due at the time of registration.
Dropping a course without withdrawing from the University
http://www.usm.maine.edu/~reg/PDF/DROPFORM.pdf
SEMESTER/SESSION 11 WEEKS OR LONGER
Student charges will be refunded to students who are voluntarily withdrawing or
dropping courses from the University of Maine System institutions in accordance with the schedule and
provisions set forth below. For purposes of this practice withdrawal is defined as students who give official
notification of their withdrawal to the University after a semester/session begins. Dropping courses is
defined as a reduction in course load while remaining enrolled in the University. Refunds for drops are
issued during the first two weeks only. Some fees are not refundable and they include application,
matriculation, and orientation. If a student leaves the university without official notification (dropout), the
practices and procedures in this APL do not apply and thus dropouts are not entitled to refunds. The
practices and associated procedures apply to all students and should be administered consistently at every university.
Determination of Attendance
For purposes of calculating refunds, the attendance period begins on the opening day of scheduled
university classes, includes weekends and holidays, and ends on the date the student notifies the
Registrar's Office in writing, that (s)he is withdrawing.

Withdrawing from all courses
http://www.usm.maine.edu/~reg/semesterleave.pdf
A student may withdraw from all courses by completing a Semester Leave Form. This form is available at any major registration site and needs to be returned to a major registration site. Students may also withdraw by mail sending a letter to the Registrar’s Office or by telephone calling 780-5105 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The date of withdrawal is established on the day the University receives notification. If a withdrawal notice is mailed, the postmark will be used to establish the withdrawal date.
If a student withdraws from the University during the add/drop period of the semester, there will be no courses or grades recorded. Students withdrawing after the add/drop period through 60% of the semester will receive a W grade for each course in which the student was enrolled. Students withdrawing after 60% of the semester will receive an automatic grade of F.
REMINDER
Failure to properly withdraw may result in a FAILING grade and FINANCIAL LIABILITY. Discussion with a faculty member is not proper notification of change.
