Michelle Vazquez Jacobus is an Associate Professor in Social and Behavioral Sciences & Leadership and Organizational Studies at USM Lewiston-Auburn College.  Her background as a lawyer and social worker, allows her to focus her research work on community-engaged learning and community capacity building, analyzing issues from diverse viewpoints, particularly diversity and multiculturalism.  She has co-authored several articles exploring USM’s engagement with the community, including pieces focusing on local immigrant populations, collaborative multi-disciplinary community engagement projects, and the importance of community engagement on pedagogy and social justice. Jacobus is currently conducting research on the impact of community engagement in retention, learning, self-esteem and success of non-traditional students at USM, particularly by studying the experiences of students in community engagement classes at LAC.
