Assistant Professor of Chemistry Lucille Benedict recently co-authored an article with Dr. Harry E. Pence (SUNY Oneonta), on QR coded student-created videos which was published in the April 2012 issue of the Journal of Chemical Education.
Staff and faculty in the USM Muskie School of Public Service, including Executive Director Mark Lapping; Samuel Merrill, Director of the New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC); Barbara Ives of the NE/EFC; Bruce Clary, chair of the Public Policy & Management (MPPM) masters program; Tanya Swain, a 2009 MPPM graduate, and Amanda Beal, a USM graduate, will undertake the creation of a Maine food plan with funding from a collaborative including the Sandy River Charitable Foundation, Kendall Foundation, Broad Reach Fund, John Merck Fund, and Maine Community Foundation.
Associate Professor of Sociology John Baugher was recently received a summer grant funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This prestigious award, worth $6,000, was awarded to Baugher for his grant proposal "Understanding the Emotional and Spiritual Journeys of Hospice Volunteers: A Humanistic Inquiry."
An open house celebrating the completion of the new Undergraduate Research Center will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. The event is an opportunity to visit and tour the newly completed research area located on the 3rd floor, C-wing, of the Science Building.
USM has received an NSF grant worth over half a million dollar to support a STEM Scholarship Program to improve educational opportunities from entry to degree completion for 41 academically talented and financially needy incoming freshmen and community college transfer students who are interested in STEM careers in Computer Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, and Technology Management.
On Friday, April 27th, 2012, the University of Southern Maine and Southern Maine Community College will convene for Thinking Matters, their annual University-wide exhibition of student research, scholarship, and creative achievement, to be held on USM’s Portland campus. Event begins at 8:30AM at Sullivan Gym.
New Work: New York is a photographic project documenting the architecture, street activity, and urban environment of Manhattan. For the academic year 2011-12, Rose Marasco was awarded the Provost’s Research Fellowship in support of her work. She will be giving an illustrated lecture at the USM Glickman Library, on the Portland campus, in Room 423-424 on Wednesday April 25, 2012 at 4 pm. The lecture will include work from several previous projects, including the Domestic Objects and Projections series, and will set this current project within the framework of her interests and commitment as a visual artist.
Three years ago, the USM Women and Gender Studies program received a major US State Department Higher Education for Development grant to partner with gender studies faculty in the United Arab Emirates. That collaboration culminated in a conference on Gender and Women's Studies in the Arab Region which took place at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates March 7-9, 2012. Six of the USM Women and Gender Studies council members will be sharing their experiences with the USM community on April 4, 2012.
Associate Professor of Music and Resident Composer Daniel Sonenberg will be presenting music from his opera The Summer King, based on the life of the Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson. The opera was completed during his sabbatical last fall. Two arias and two duets from the opera will be performed for the first time since its completion. These will be performed at the Portland Conservatory Festival of Contemporary Music on April 14, 2012
On Friday, March 23, 2012, students from various disciplines represented USM at the Second Annual State House Undergraduate Research Day held in The Hall of Flags at the Maine State House in Augusta, Maine. This event highlighted the wide-range of research work conducted by undergraduate students throughout the University of Maine System. The projects displayed showcase the many opportunities for engaged learning at Maine’s public universities.
