Associate Professor of Music and Resident Composer Daniel Sonenberg will be presenting music from his opera The Summer King, based on the life of the Negro League baseball player Josh Gibson. The opera was completed during his sabbatical last fall. Two arias and two duets from the opera will be performed for the first time since its completion. These will be performed at the Portland Conservatory Festival of Contemporary Music on April 14, 2012
On Friday, March 23, 2012, students from various disciplines represented USM at the Second Annual State House Undergraduate Research Day held in The Hall of Flags at the Maine State House in Augusta, Maine. This event highlighted the wide-range of research work conducted by undergraduate students throughout the University of Maine System. The projects displayed showcase the many opportunities for engaged learning at Maine’s public universities.
April 20th is the 2nd anniversary of BP's Deepwater Horizon Oil Crisis. To commemmorate the event, we will show a short clips of the Environmental Health & Toxicology Club's activities, and the IMAX movie "Whales: An Unforgettable Journey".
Dr. Wise and Dr. Xie and two graduate students will attend the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting on March 31 to April 4, 2012 in Chicago, IL. Presenting research from the Wise Laboratory.
Erika Diffin, a student in the Biology Masters degree program and her faculty advisor Dr. David Champlin, an Associate Professor of Biology, are preparing a manuscript describing their collaboration with University of New England (UNE) School of Pharmacy Professor John Schloss and Research Technician Lisa Harding.
The New Americans Project, a collaboration of the Muskie School of Public Service with Oldham Innovative Research, has released its final report, co-authored by Helen Ward and Julie Atkins of the Cutler Institute’s Children, Youth & Families Program.
In a report prepared for the Maine Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, researchers at the Muskie School of Public Service captured the first-hand experiences and input of long-term care supports and services consumers, family members, workers, advocates, and community members so that their voices might become an integral part of state-wide planning for such services and supports.
We are currently accepting applications for the 2012 Gulf of Mexico Voyage on a rolling basis until all the legs of the voyage are filled. We anticipate this year’s voyage starting on May 22, 2012.
Associate Professor of Philosophy Kate Wininger will be presenting a paper at the 43rd Annual Convention of the Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) being held March 15-18, 2012, in Rochester, NY.
Associate Professor of English Lucinda Cole will be presenting at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, being held March 22-24, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas.
