UAE Conference Update

Three years ago, the USM Women and Gender Studies program received a major US State Department Higher Education for Development grant to partner with gender studies faculty in the United Arab Emirates. That collaboration culminated in a conference on Gender and Women's Studies in the Arab Region which took place at the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates last month (March 7-9, 2012).  Co-organized by USM Professor Susan Feiner and UAE Professor Nawar Golley, the conference was a resounding success with over 90 papers presented by scholars from universities all over the Arab region as well as from universities in England, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the United States.  The program is proud of this historic partnership between USM and the American University of Sharjah as it represents the first such linkage of a Women and Gender Studies program in the United States with a university in the Arab region.

Please join six of the WGS council members who attended the conference in the UAE as they report back to campus share their experiences with the USM community.  The talk will be held on April 4, 2012, 5:30 PM in Wishcamper 102. Council members presenting are Susan Feiner, Christine Holden, Charlotte Rosenthal, Susan Fineran, Deepika Marya, and Wendy Chapkis.
