  • Resident Composer receives NEA Grant

    Professor Dan Sonenberg has received a $15,000 award from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the orchestration and production of the world-premiere of his opera 'The Summer King' with Portland Ovations at Merrill Auditorium.   • Ecomaine Sculpture

    Creativity Has No Limits

    USM Art students Virginia Jarvi, Dylan Rohman, and Christopher Perkins, together with Professor of Art Michael Shaughnessy, created a 15' sculpture which was installed at Ecomaine's ash landfill entrance in Westbrook. The rescued pieces include flatware, bed springs, and lobster traps. It highlights the recycling that happens daily at the landfill. More

    Jeff Thompson, a USM computer science student mentored by Professor Clare Congdon recently received national recognition as an undergraduate researcher. He was selected as an Honorable Mention in the Computing Research Association's (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award (Male) 2013.  More

Graduate students from the Muskie School of Public Service have been visiting elementary school classrooms around the state to educate kids about the dangers of diseases caused by ticks and mosquitoes.

As part of the evolution in the Muskie School of Public Service - the new Master's in Policy, Planning, and Management (MPPM) prepares graduates for leadership roles in government, nonprofit organizations, and the private sector by developing a strong, multi-disciplinary foundation of skills and knowledge in the fields of policy, planning and management. As part of the University of Southern Maine’s Metropolitan University initiative, the program also encourages students to interact with their surrounding community, through various forms of engagement.

Thinking Matters 2015

Thinking Matters 2015 will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015 in the Abromson Center, on the USM Portland Campus.

Innovative teaching and creative work – whether in a classroom, in a lab or in a studio – are the heart of any dynamic university culture.  At University of Southern Maine, it is showcased at Thinking Matters, a one-day, once-a-year conference, that is a capstone that reflects what's going on all year long in departments all across campus.  It promotes the high quality student-faculty research collaborations and opportunities available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Its an event that allows students and faculty to share their work with each other, their colleagues, and the general public.

To support research, scholarship and creative activity to: promote knowledge, discovery and practical application to advance Maine's economy, communities and the quality of life for Maine citizens; to strengthen classroom education and transform the lives of students through real world learning opportunities; and to support faculty and staff commitment to excellence in scholarly accomplishments regionally, nationally and internationally.
