An Assistive Technology Device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities ( P.L. 105-394, the "Tech. Act" of 1998 ). Both homemade and commercially available recreation assistive devices are depicted in the Recreation Assistive Device Gallery. Many of the devices pictured are owned by RATE and are primarily used for instructional purposes with students enrolled at USM. RATE does not rent or loan devices to citizens. When the devices are not being used for academics purposes, however, an individual can make an appointment to view or try a device that s/he is considering for purchase or has intentions of making. Certified therapeutic recreation specialists, who have met RATE criteria, can arrange to borrow devices to use with their clients providing that the devices are not being used for academic purposes.
