 Lewiston-Auburn's
shared definition
In the Spring of 2004, USM/L-A conducted a review
and survey of possible definitions of Service-
Learning. The Leadership Committee disseminated a list seeking
faculty, staff, student, and community
input and revision. The following
definition was adopted by L-A for a shared understanding of S-L on
campus and in the community to help focus our program as it grows and
develops.
Service-learning:
-
Integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning,
encourage civic engagement, and strengthen communities.
-
Allows students to participate in a thoughtfully organized service
activity that meets identified real-world issues and social needs.
-
Includes reflection on the service activity in such a way as to gain
further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the
discipline, and an enhanced relationship with the community and its needs.
