What is Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM)?
CBM is an assessment system that provides standardized, reliable, and valid general outcome measures of student performance in the core academic areas of reading, writing, spelling, and math.
The "maze" test is a type of CBM that measures silent reading fluency. Students are given 3 minutes to read a passage silently and circle the word that goes in a blank. Below are mazes for grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. These mazes were developed from biography, history literature, and science texts at each grade level. These measures are free for use by all educators.
These mazes were developed primarily to be used as progress measures for students participating in intervention for reading comprehension. At this time, there are no national norms for these mazes. Directions for administration and scoring can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.
