The Southern Maine Area Resource Team (SMART) for Schools was a grant-funded afterschool tutoring program in Gorham. Through a generous three year grant from the Reading Matters to Maine fund of the Maine Community Foundation, the program provided free and low-cost tutoring for children in kindergarten through grade 5.
The program, called the SMART Learning Lab, provided low cost tutoring two days per week for students with academic difficulties.
The tutoring used evidence-based instructional methods found effective in numerous research studies over time. In particular, direct instruction of reading and math skills is provided. In addition, the students completed weekly progress measures to keep track of their learning progress.
The Learning Lab is seeking other opportunites to provide low cost tutoring to school-age children.
