Strategic Planning Process

USM President Selma Botman

Colleagues, Students, and Friends of USM,

I am delighted to present Preparing USM for the Future 2009-2014. This new strategic plan will provide a roadmap for the university over the next five years as USM seeks to serve the needs and aspirations of central and southern Maine. Just as importantly, it will help us make sure that our students graduate with the high-quality education they must have for personal and professional success.

I want to thank the many people at USM and in the community who contributed to the process that has resulted in this new plan:  the four Working Groups  that kicked off this process in fall 2008, the many respondents to the plan’s drafts as they evolved over spring 2009, and the extraordinarily committed individuals who offered their suggestions because they care so deeply about the future of this university and its role in educating a new generation of Mainers for rewarding lives and careers. These contributions have enriched this strategic plan immeasurably and broadened its sensitivity to the future of our region, our state, our nation, and the world.

Preparing USM for the Future 2009-2014 charts the course toward USM's next stage as a university. Now we face the challenge of realizing the goals it sets. I am excited by the work ahead of us, for I have the privilege of working with a talented, deeply engaged community of students, faculty, and staff who welcome this opportunity to build the future of the university they love.

Accordingly, in the fall we will be working closely with the deans, directors, and vice presidents to begin the thoughtful, comprehensive work necessary to make this vision of the university a reality.  I look forward to working with them and with our friends in the community over the coming months as we build the 21st-century public comprehensive university that central and southern Maine deserves.

Sincerely,

Selma Botman
