Stonecoast in Ireland News

October 27, 2008

In January 2009, the sixth Stonecoast in Ireland residency will be held in Howth, a beautiful seaside village near Dublin. Stonecoast faculty members Baron Wormser, Annie Finch, and Ted Deppe will be joined by eminent Irish writers Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Anthony Glavin, and Macdara Woods. A literary field trip will include a lively talk by scholar Robert Nicholson at the James Joyce tower in Sandy Cove and a private tour of the massive WB Yeats exhibition housed at the National Library in Dublin. Our roster is full for the January residency in Howth, but we are accepting applications from students who would like to be on a waiting list.

Students are encouraged to watch for news on the Stonecoast listserv this November on how to apply for the July 2009 residency. We will meet from 6-13 July in Dingle, located on Ireland’s stunningly beautiful west coast. Stonecoast faculty members Elizabeth Searle and Ted Deppe will be joined by Irish writers, and a field trip is planned to the Great Blasket Island where so many of the classics of Irish literature were written. The Dingle peninsula has the second highest mountain in Ireland, wild beaches, great hiking paths, and wonderful traditional music every night.

The dates and location for the January 2010 residency will be announced next spring. We hope you’ll join us sometime during your time at Stonecoast for an educationally challenging and totally enjoyable residency in Ireland. For more information, visit the Stonecoast in Ireland webpage at www.usm.maine.edu/stonecoastmfa or contact SCI director Ted Deppe sc.ireland@yahoo.com.
