Student News October 26 , 2009 Mihku Paul Anderson’s (S ‘10) one-woman show, Look Twice: The Waponahki in Image & Verse, opened on October 9th at the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. The Abbe is the premiere museum for Native history and culture in Maine, whose collections, exhibitions, and programs focus on Native American traditions in Maine and explore the broader Native American experience, past and present. Look Twice is an ekphrastic installation of historic photographs, original art and poetry designed entirely by the artist and will hang until April 2010; http://www.abbemuseum.org/. The opening reception included a poetry reading by Mihku, taped by the office of Multicultural Affairs at USM. Look for it in the near future on YouTube! The Maine Humanities Council recorded the event, which will be published as a podcast on the council's website. Zachary Jernigan’s short story, “All My Ghosts,” has been accepted for publication in Theaker’s Quarterly Fiction #31, due out in October. Matthew Quinn Martin recently secured representation with Barbara Poelle of The Irene Goodman Literary Agency. In addition, his novelette, Hazardous Material, is up at Aphelion Magazine. Alison McMahan, Ph.D., the author of Alice Guy Blach: Lost Visionary of the Cinema (Continuum, 2002), is a contributor to the catalogue for the show Alice Guy Blach: Cinema Pioneer, organized by Joan Simon, with numerous films newly preserved by Kim Tomadjoglou. The exhibition is primarily a film retrospective which will be on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Nov. 6, 2009 & Jan. 24, 2010. September 14, 2009 Cynthia Kraack's first novel, Minnesota Cold, was released September 1 on North Star Press of St. Cloud. First wave launch activities included an interview on KFAI's Write On Radio show, readings at Common Good Books in St. Paul and The Loft Literary Center, and a major party for friends and family. She will be reading and signing books at the Midwest Booksellers Association conference in late September as well as the Twin Cities Book Festival in October. Tammy Wilson’s novel excerpt-turned short story, "The Kit 'n' Kaboodle" won first place in the Jesse Stuart Award for Young Adult Fiction at the Mountain Heritage Literary Festival this past weekend. The festival is held each year at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN. June 15 , 2009 Poet Linda Buckmaster has two poems in the Anniversary issue of Puckerbrush Review and one in the most recent issue of Words and Images from USM. One of her poems will be included in the catalog of the Great Spruce Head Island artists' show at The Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth. All of the above poems were written during her residency on Great Spruce Head Island in upper Penobscot Bay in 2007 and were Published in her monograph Island Way. June 01 , 2009 Jennifer Brissett’s story "The Executioner" will be the lead story in the upcoming anthology Warrior Wisewoman 2. Libby Cudmore and Matthew Quinn Martin's co-authored short story, "Convention of Exphrasis" has been accepted in Crossing Chaos' anthology Quantum Genre on the Planet of the Arts. Tammy Wilson, who will begin her fiction track at Stonecoast in July, has been invited to present a short story, "Priscilla the Meatpacker," at the Southern Women Writers Conference at Berry College in Rome, GA this September. Her story was previously published in NYU's Epiphany. Tammy lives in Western North Carolina.
May 18 , 2009 Libby Cudmore’s CNF essay, "Girls Night Out: A Tale of Terror" will appear in the inaugural issue of the Southern Women's Review. Jeff Kass has had two poems accepted for publication in Stone's Throw, including "On the Newsweek Photo of Eleven Iraqi Boys Swimming in a Bomb Crater" which was workshopped at the most recent Stonecoast residency. In addition, Jeff has had new stories accepted by Amarillo Bay, Defenestration and Bull Men's Fiction and a flash fiction piece accepted by Hobart. His chapbook of poems How to Rock a Hooded Sweatshirt has also been accepted for publication by New Sins Press, and 450 people attended the debut of his one-man show Wrestle the Great Fear on April 29 at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in Ann Arbor MI. Finally, just to add an extra layer of cheese, Mayor John Heiftje proclaimed April 29, 2009 "Jeff Kass Day" in the City of Ann Arbor in recognition of Jeff's work as a teacher, writer and organizer of youth literary arts programs. Mihku Paul Anderson was selected as an interview subject for a new documentary produced by the University of New England. She is the first participant from the UNE writer's group to enter an MFA program. The documentary is titled "The Maine Women Writer's Collection: The First 50 Years." The premiere will take place in June, as part of the 50th anniversary MWWC Symposium and is private. A public screening will be held in autumn 2009. Awards are based on scholarship, motivation, contributions to USM or the community, and experience both inside and outside the classroom. Started in 1996, the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund awards up to six scholarships annually in the amount of $1500. Applicants must either be a USM graduate or the relative of a USM graduate. Joanne’s new husband (as of March 27th), H. Michael Alpren, graduated from USM’s program in Counselor Education. Joanne’s short story, “Last Respects,” has been accepted for publication in the Southern Women's Review. Laura Williams is a double finalist in the RWA River City Romance Writers “Duel on the Delta” contest. Michaela Roessner-Herman, writing under her pen name Michaela Roessner, has sold "The Klepsydra" -- a chapter from her bestiary -- to the Polyphony 7 anthology of experimental literature, published by Wheatland Press. She'd like to thank Jim Kelly and all of her Stonecoast classmates who workshopped the piece two semesters ago. Her short story "Horse Year Women," originally published in the Jan., 2006 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, has been included in a French edition anthology of stories from F&SF. To add to the thrill, she's not the only Roessner included in the anthology. A reprint of the one story her grandfather Elmer Roessner (a newsman and short story writer) had sold to F&SF back in the 1960s, "The Dragon of Somerset Street," was also included.
Linda Sienkiewicz has a poem and seven pages of artwork published in the Summer 08 Graffiti issue of East to West. One section of the journal has short poems written as graffiti, not only brick walls, but also places such as a woman's back, stacked coffee cups, in the snow, and on George W. Bush. Jeff Kass' story "On the Case" was selected as an Editor's Choice for the 2008 E.M. Koeppel Short Fiction Award @ www.Writecornerpress.com. In addition, the program he directs – The VOLUME Youth Poetry Project - will be featured in a documentary about the youth spoken word movement set to air on HBO in January 2009.
Christopher Varlack’s poem "Friday Night Vigils" won second place in the Dylan Days contest, a contest in honor of Bob Dylan, and so it will be published in their literary journal, Talkin' Blues, The contest website is http://www.dylandays.com/writers.htm, but not all of the information has been updated yet. His first book, The Lyre Player: A Portable Writer's Guide has been accepted for publication by Apprentice House. The book is a guide to various poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and scriptwriting forms important for young writers to experiment as they begin their journeys as writers. The Calvino Prize is awarded to experimental fiction written in the spirit of Itlalian author Italo Calvino. Lisa Romeo's essay, "Santa? Her humor piece, "How to write the Holiday Letter" appeared inthe Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on December 19 in the Life Support Column. Jessica Takach has received a $1,700 Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant to travel to Hungary next fall to complete her novel.
