The USM Recreation and Leisure Studies department has teamed up with Veterans Adaptive Sports & Training program at Pineland Farms to provide students with a hands-on experience throughout the course of the 2014 Spring semester. Students enrolled in the Rec 399 course meet at Pineland Farms and learn how to plan, facilitate and evaluate adaptive outdoor winter recreational experiences such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, orienteering, and nordic pole walking for veterans with physical disabilities. The VAST program demonstrates that regular exercise and fitness reduce stress, depression, and secondary medical conditions for persons with disabilities and often increase self-esteem, education success, and quality of life.

Sunday, February 2, veterans and families are welcome to attend VAST’s Veterans Appreciation Day hosted at Pineland farms. This is a great opportunity to join the Recreation and Leisure Studies department supporting VAST by spreading the word, volunteering, and joining in on all the fun! Activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, skating, ski instructions, and trolley tours. Skis, ski boots, and snowshoes available yet limited for those who do not have their own to bring.
