Frequently Asked Questions

Who can register for Summer Session classes?

USM has open enrollment for Summer Session. This means it is not necessary to be accepted to USM to take a Summer Session class. USM students, students from other colleges and universities, interested adults, senior citizens, and high school students (with documented academic ability for university level courses) are all welcome. When can I register for a Summer Session class?

Summer Session registration will begin on March 30th and will continue until the start of any particular course as space allows. For detailed registrtion dates, please click here.

How can I register for a Summer Session class?

There are three basic ways to register. You can register in person at all USM campuses during regular business hours. If you are a current USM student you may register online by using MaineStreet Student Self-Service. You may also call the Summer Session office at (207) 780-5617 for registration assistance. How will I know if I am enrolled in the class I want to take?

You will get immediate verbal confirmation whether you register in person or by phone. If registering by MaineStreet Student Self-Service, you will be able to see the course in your Summer 2009 course schedule.

Can I still register after classes begin?

As a rule for a 7 week class, students may add a class through the second class meeting when they receive permission of the instructor. For courses that meet for less than 7 weeks, students should contact the instructor.

What should I do once I'm registered?

If you have never taken courses at USM before, there are several thing you should do before your course starts. Listed below:

5. Make payment arrangement with Student Billing (207)780-5200

Where will class meet?

Course listings with room assignments are also posted in Portland outside Advising Services on the first floor of Payson Smith Hall, in Luther Bonney Hall Lobby, and in Gorham outside the library in Bailey Hall. To get the specific location for a class via the web, you can locate your class on your MaineStreet Self-Service. You may also call our office during regular business hours at 780-5617.

How can I tell if the class I want to take is still available?

To see if a class is still open via the web, locate your class on the MaineStreet course search by clicking here. You can also check course availability by calling (207) 780- 5800 or by calling the Summer Session office directly at 780-5617.

How do I find out if a course has prerequisites?

Generally, course prerequisites follow the on-line course descriptions. Course descriptions are linked to the course number on the MaineStreet course search. If you have questions about a course prerequisite, contact the academic department offering the course before registering. Sometimes an equivalent prerequisite may be accepted or you may be able to register with the instructor's permission.

What does it cost?

How can I pay?

Generally, full payment is due at the time of registration. The University accepts Master Card, VISA and Discover credit cards for payments. Visit our Tuition and Fees site for complete financial details including payment plans and refund schedules.

Can I apply for financial aid?

Eligible students can apply for financial aid for Summer Session classes. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information at 780-5250.

What is the refund policy?

If you withdraw on or before the first day of class you receive a 100% refund. More information coming soon.

How do I get my Summer Session grades?

Grades are not mailed to students. Grades are usually processed by the registrar's office within 7 days of the end of the course. Students may check their grades using MaineStreet Self-Service or by calling the Registrar's Office and requesting a transcript (see next question for more details).

How do I get a transcript?

To get an official transcript of your grades, you must complete a Transcript Request form or submit a signed request in writing to: Registrar’s office, 37 College Ave, Gorham, ME 04038. Students may also fax their request to (207) 780-5517. See the Registrar’s web site for complete information. All university charges must be paid before a transcript is released.

Are my courses transferable to another college or university?

USM is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. To know if your university will accept transfer of a USM course, please check with your home institution regarding their acceptance procedure. This is usually available from your registrar's office or your academic advisor at your home institution.

Is on-campus housing available?

Housing is available on a first come first served basis in Gorham during the summer. Visit the Residential Student Services site for complete details.
