Junior Music Academy

July 19-25, 2009

For incoming 7th graders through outgoing 8th graders

The popular Junior Music Academy is growing stronger and heading into its 16th season at the University of Southern Maine. The seven-day program draws students from all over New England and gives junior high-age instrumental musicians the opportunity for musical growth and development during the summer.

All academy members will participate in concert band, chorus, instrument sectionals, and small ensembles. Students, who wish, may also audition for jazz band. In addition, academy members will get to enjoy free concerts performed by local professional musicians and one fun-filled night at Funtown in Saco .

Applicants for this program should be incoming seventh graders through outgoing eighth graders. (Younger students should refer to the Youth Band Day Camp).

Applicants should play one or more of the following instruments:

  • flute
  • oboe
  • bassoon
  • clarinet
  • saxophone
  • percussion/set drums
  • french horn

  • trumpet
  • trombone
  • baritone/euphonium
  • tuba
  • guitar *
  • piano *

* guitarists and pianists should also play a wind or percussion instrument. Guitar and piano is available in the Jazz Band portion of the Academy and auditions will be held for those instruments.

Instrumentation is limited, so placement will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
