COR 142J (3 Credits)

This course examines the relationship of baseball to American society. It considers historical parallels between the coming of age of the United States and its "national pastime" along with a wide range of other issues. These include race, gender, stadium architecture, business aspects of baseball, careers, and the ethics of sports.

"A wonderful adventure in which I re-discovered America."

The course consists of a bus trip to minor and major league baseball cities. Lectures, discussions, and films constitute the educational experience on board the bus. Conferences with coaches, former players, and front office staff in the various baseball cities we visit are arranged to enhance the educational experience. In the past we have also met with umpires, players from the Negro Leagues, women who played in the A.A.G.P.B.L., newspaper writers, community business leaders, book authors, broadcasters, and even Hall of Fame players. This course has won a national education award and has been featured in local and national newspapers as well as television programs.
