August 9-16, 2008

HRDx 552 (3 Credits)

This new elective within the adult education program is offered for adult educators who are interested in studying the history of Chautauqua in-depth, experiencing adult education programming as it is offered by The Chautauqua Institute today, and reflecting on how these experiences can inform their practice as adult educators.

Participants will participate in online discussions two weeks before the trip and then travel to The Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, New York for the one week summer intensive experience. An online follow-up discussion will take place for one week during September.

The one week immersion experience during Week # 8 of Chautauqua’s proposed Summer 2008 programming will focus on the topic “What’s for Dinner: Food and Politics in the 21st Century." We will meet each morning as a group and then attend the morning lecture given at the Chautauqua Institute. Lecturers include Marion Nestle, professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at NYU and the author of Food Politics : How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health. Participants will be expected to choose an additional educational opportunity each afternoon from the extensive list of Chautauqua programming.

Participants will read two required texts and a text of their choice before the start of the course and submit a 3-4 page paper on one of the texts by August 6th. The two required texts will be the focus of pre-trip online discussions. At Chautauqua, participants will share highlights from their selected text, keep a journal, and do an exploratory field exercise based on a topic/area of choice. A final paper that integrates learning from the readings, journaling and Chautauqua experience will be due September 15th.
