May 24-June 10, 2008
MUS 399 (6 credits)
This program in the Czech Republic offers students a unique
opportunity to study the music of Czech composers and apply their
techniques to the development of composition curricula for
children. Situated in the Czech Republic, this course will offer
students an opportunity to approach the partnership between
literature and music from musical and educational perspectives.
This program will maintain a balance between educational theory and
practice. Students will have the opportunity to develop their own
compositional and analytical skills. Some of this work will be
guided by Vit Zouhar, an internationally regarded Czech composer.
School-based observations and teaching will form a critical component
in this course and students will design and implement a special
composition project for Czech school children.
Additionally, students will have opportunity to work with Czech
musicians and local professional ensembles such as the Moravian
Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Damian, Moravian Theater, and other
groups. Students will also have the extraordinary opportunity to make
their own studio recordings at the Olomouc branch of Czech Radio
(Cesky rozhlas, the national radio station). A variety of cultural
outings and events will round out the program.
