In USM’s Spanish Language and Culture in Santiago de Compostela, Spain summer program you will:

  • Learn first hand why thousands of pilgrims and students have been drawn to Santiago de Compostela since the Middle Ages.
  • Explore the rich history and architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Immerse yourself in the study of the Spanish language and culture at the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, one of the oldest and best universities in Spain.

In this four-week program, students will live and study in Santiago de Compostela, a manageably sized city in northwestern Spain. Santiago is famous for its student life and hospitality, and students will live in the Old Quarter to take advantage of the city’s historic past and its architectural treasures. Santiago is also home to the tomb of St. James, the patron saint of Spain. This academic program coincides with the celebration of Spain’s most important national holiday, the Feast of St. James, with concerts, cultural exhibitions, dance and an unforgettable fireworks display.

“The program was excellent. I would do it again!”

Each weekday begins with four hours of Spanish language instruction that focuses on developing oral fluency. The university offers Spanish courses at three levels: elementary, intermediate and advanced. In the more advanced classes students enjoy talks by scholars in art history, history and contemporary Spanish politics. Students will take a placement test on the first day of class to determine the appropriate level. Students should complete at least one year of Spanish instruction before considering this program. Afternoons are spent in cultural excursions and working on a cultural project of students’ own choice.

“The Colegio de San Agustin was so wonderful and the staff there were amazing.”

While in Spain, students will live in campus housing in the Colegio Mayor San Agustín, a restored eighteenth-century residence hall in the heart of the Old Quarter. Students have single rooms with private bathrooms, and the program also includes a meal plan with three meals a day on weekdays. On the weekends, students are free to sample local cuisine at the many cafes and restaurants that Santiago has to offer. Two Saturday tours, to the Rías Baixas and A Coruña, are also included in the cost of the program.
