Information on Major Database for Social Work [1]

Many journals are indexed "selectively" by the following databases; however, the articles included vary between the two databases.

Social Work Abstracts

Social Work Abstracts(SWA) divides its entries into four broad categories:

  • Social Work Profession
  • Theory and Practice
  • Areas of Service
  • Social Issues and Problems

SWA doesn't index web resources. SWA does not include book reviews. Most of the journal titles that SWA considers "core" are indexed "cover-to-cover" by both databases.

Social Services Abstracts

Social Services Abstracts (SSA) has three content areas:

  • Social Work
  • Social Services
  • Social Policy

Social Services Abstracts is much more international, with 50% of its content coming from "international" sources. SSA includes 69,000 "editorial-selected" web sites. Overall, SSA is much larger, with 107,000 total records (including book reviews), compared to SWA's 51,000.
