Social Work Competencies
What are Competencies?
The goal of the social work program in the School of Social Work at the University of Southern Maine is to prepare students for social work practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The social work practice model expresses the ten core competencies as outlined in the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (2008) of the Council on Social Work Education. These ten competencies relate to: professional identity; ethical practice; critical thinking; diversity; human rights and social justice; research; human behavior and the social environment; social policy; evolving contexts of social work practice; and professional interventions at multiple levels.
