The School of Social Work at the University of Southern Maine is pleased to announce that it has received reaccreditation of the school’s Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Master of Social Work programs from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Both the undergraduate and graduate programs will remain accredited until 2021.

“The reaccreditation of our BSW and MSW programs for the next eight years is a wonderful testimony to the dedicated work of the faculty, staff, students, and our community over the past two years during the self-study process,” said Susan Fineran, director of the USM School of Social Work. “Although reaccreditation is always a huge undertaking, it is also an incredible learning opportunity for faculty to re-examine the needs of our students and the communities they serve. We are also able to ensure that our school stays up to date with the challenges presented by the 21st century.”

The School of Social Work’s undergraduate program first received accreditation in 1974, and the graduate MSW program was accredited by the CSWE in 2003. As of 2013, the school had 328 current students and had graduated nearly 1,200 alumnae/i. Graduates of the School of Social Work make an impact throughout their communities in a wide range of practice areas, including medical social work, school social work, hospice, psychotherapy, nonprofit leadership, refugee and immigrant services, policy and research, and substance abuse treatment services.

The CSWE Commission of Accreditation confers accreditation status on schools of social work, developing accreditation standards that define competent preparation and ensuring that programs meet them. In accordance with the requirements of the CSWE’s recognition body, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation administers a multistep accreditation process that involves program self-studies, site visits, and commission reviews.
