Teacher Education

Welcome to the Teacher Education Program
Effective teaching is grounded in knowledge, experience, critical reflection and commitment
Teaching is a complex enterprise. It is an art, a craft, a science, a collection of skills and common sense

We in the Teacher Education Department are dedicated to ensuring that USM’s teacher candidates have the knowledge, skills and dispositions to teach in the increasingly diverse and demanding schools of today. We are committed to providing our teacher candidates, whether undergraduate or graduate, simultaneous classroom or community experiences and course work that help them connect the theories and research of education with the everyday work with students in K-12 schools.

Six graduates and one current student from the University of Southern Maine (USM) School of Education and Human Development were recently recognized for their selection as Maine's 2014 Teachers of the Year at the USM Alumni Educators’ Reunion Luncheon.
