This new and innovative program is currently being offered at USM's Lewiston-Auburn College. If you are interested in earning a bachelor's degree in addition to being certified to teach our program is the right place to start.
Our program has four different areas of focus or tracks:
- Secondary Teacher Certification/Life Science Certification
- Secondary Teacher Certification/Humanities-English Certification
- Secondary Teacher Certification/Humanities-Social Studies Certification
- Secondary Teacher Certification/Humanities-Combined English and Social Studies Certification

Courses & Requirements
Life Science Certification:
The Bachelor of Science major in Natural and Applied Sciences offers all the required courses for secondary teacher certification (7-12) in Life Science. Students study Natural and Applied Science, Common Core, and Education courses, completing a semester of student teaching in their final year.
Life Sciences endorsement is obtained by earning at least 24 credit hours in life science credits. Students may choose to take an additional 15 credits to earn a Physical Science endorsement as well.
Successful completion of Praxis I and II is also required.
English Certification:
The Bachelor of Science major in Arts and Humanities offers all the required courses for secondary teacher certification (7-12) in English. Students study Humanities, Common Core, and Education courses, completing a semester of student teaching in their final year.
English endorsement is obtained by earning at least 24 credit hours in life science credits.
Successful completion of Praxis I and II is also required.
Social Studies Certification:
The Bachelor of Science major in Arts and Humanities offers all the required courses for secondary teacher certification (7-12) in Social Studies. Students study Humanities, Common Core, and Education courses, completing a semester of student teaching in their final year.
Social Studies endorsement is obtained by earning at least 24 credit hours in life science credits.
Successful completion of Praxis I and II is also required.
Combined English and Social Studies Certification:
Students can earn dual certification by meeting the requirements of both the English and Social Studies areas of study. The dual certification can be accomplished within the 120 credits.
The course sequence will be determined by consulting with your faculty advisor.
