Denise Enrico is a Lecturer in the Literacy, Language, and Culture Department and Coordinator of the Maine Scholastic Writing Awards. These Awards encourage students in grades 7-12 across the state to pursue their creative talents in writing. She has been a member of the Center for Inquiry in Literacy, a literacy advisory board for the Maine Department of Education. With two colleagues she conducted a study on reading instruction in Maine’s elementary schools which was published in the New England Reading Association Journal.
Denise is also the Executive Director of the Southern Maine Writing Project (SMWP). The Southern Maine Writing Project is a community of diverse educators passionate about building knowledge and transforming classroom practices across the curriculum to improve writing and learning for all students, K – University. The SMWP is a regional site of the National Writing Project, the only provider of professional development in writing named in the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Denise has participated in professional presentations at the local, state, and national level. These include MDOE sponsored conferences on comprehension and writing, and at the International Reading Association National Convention, a session on using technology in a writing classroom. Her academic interests include writing in all content areas, comprehension, and designing and managing a student centered literacy classroom.
