The July 29th episode of Blunt Youth Radio, a weekly program on USM's WMPG radio station, featured a discussion of tourism in Maine. Invited speakers included Kreg Ettenger, Associate Professor of Anthropology in USM's Muskie School of Public Service and Chair of the USM Program in Tourism & Hospitality.
Ettenger was asked to comment on the role tourism plays in the economy of Maine and the Portland area, the impacts that cruise ships and other forms of tourism can have, and how the new BA in Tourism & Hospitality will help prepare students to work in this field. He also spoke about the power of tourism to transform local communities in both positive and negative ways, and the importance of training students in concepts such as sustainability and respect for local culture.
Also featured on the program were Vanessa Pike, Membership Director at the Greater Portland Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Karen Arel, Executive Director of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. The one-hour episode can be streamed from the Blunt Youth Radio website.
