Phase 2 – Impact Assessment is a laboratory-based effort and focuses on determining the impact of the pollutants related to the crisis including oil, chemical dispersants and metals. Phase 2 is an ongoing long-term study that overlaps the start of Phase 1 and continues for many years after. We are using the samples collected in Phase 1 to measure the levels of chemical dispersants, oil, and metals in the whales, themselves, in other Gulf organisms, and in the air and water around them. In addition, we are using the samples to measure the impact of these chemicals and chemical mixtures on whale and human cells and DNA. Our initial outcomes of Phase 2 so far are showing a significant concern of metal exposure from the oil and concerning impacts on whale DNA.
