Writing Across the Curriculum
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
The USM Undergraduate Catalog states, “Every Baccalaureate
degree student who is admitted to the University must produce
evidence (no credit granted) of…a minimum writing
proficiency....All newly admitted baccalaureate and associate degree
students with…an SAT Writing score below 550 must take placement
examinations. Transfer and
readmitted students with 30 or more earned credits are not required
to take the English placement examination.”
The English Proficiency requirement may thus be satisfied
prior to enrolling at USM (with SAT Writing score of 550 or above) or
concurrent with matriculation (by passing USM’s English Placement
Examination). The
requirement may also be met by satisfactory completion of ENG 009A
(or for non-native speakers of English, ESL 104A).
ENG 009A is offered through the Department of Learning
Foundations, a unit within the Division of Advising and Academic
Resources. Learning
Foundations also offers students tutorial assistance by trained peer
tutors at two campus learning centers and regularly offers academic
skills workshops. For
more information, see http://www.usm.maine.edu/lap/
Students must meet the English Proficiency requirement before
registering for an English Composition course.
