Writing Across the Curriculum

IMPLEMENTING WAC AT USM

Writing requirements are tiered and sequenced so that students have opportunities at multiple points in their academic careers to explicitly develop skills in effective writing and skills in using writing to facilitate learning and develop original ideas.  In addition, many courses that are not officially part of these three tiers nonetheless include a substantial writing component to provide additional opportunities for practice and improvement.

GOALS OF THE USM WRITING CURRICULUM

Faculty involved in WAC are committed to a variety of goals and objectives. Primary goals are to foster excellent writing skills in USM students and to help students formulate original ideas through the writing process. WAC faculty intend for students to become aware of the centrality and value of writing skills in a wide variety of professional, personal, and civic contexts.  Other objectives include demystifying the writing process by breaking the process down into its component parts and to increase students’ confidence in their own writing.
